The Making of the Photo

It was towards the end of our 3 weeks in Scotland that we found ourselves in Inveraray. For the entire trip I’d been waking up without an alarm well before sunrise, and for the entire trip there wasn’t a hint of sunrise colour to be found. For some reason though on our first night in Inveraray I slept like a log and awoke just before sunrise. Peaking through the curtains I was greeted with the sky ablaze in pinks and reds and oranges. I grabbed my camera and took a few photos out the window as I knew by the time I got dressed and outside the colour would be gone.

I kicked myself for a missed opportunity, but the next morning made sure I was at the edge of the loch before dawn. It was a calm and peaceful morning as I wandered the shore alone searching for my composition, and as the light increased the sky took on pastel hues.

It wasn’t the bold and extravagant sunrise of the day before, but the colours actually felt much more fitting for the location, and the final image really seems to imbue the feelings of deep peace I experienced whilst taking it. This photograph has been a good reminder for me that sometimes things not turning out the way you’d hoped can actually be for the best.
