Fog weaves its way amongst the trees around Königsee in Berchtesgaden, Germany

The best holiday of my life!

·

Danny and I recently returned from three amazing weeks exploring the Alps in Austria and Germany. I had great intentions of sharing an update while we were away, but almost every spare moment at our hotel rooms (which weren’t many) were spent backing up and organising all the photos and videos taken.

I told myself before we left home that I wouldn’t take as much video as I did on our last trip to Wales and England, as it was quite overwhelming trying to make videos once we got home. Yeah, I didn’t go too well with that.

Danny and I also vowed this would be a more relaxed holiday, as we overdid it on the last one and were completely exhausted by the end, with both of us coming down with viruses straight after. Yeah, we didn’t go too well with that either!

The fact is, we got to explore some of the most awe-inspiringly beautiful places either of us have ever seen, so we ended up doing more walking on this trip than on the last: around 110 km in total, with a cumulative elevation gain of over 4,000 m.

Thanks to spending quite a few afternoons enjoying the Germanic spa culture, with many a sauna, spa and dip in cold pools, we at least finished this holiday in good condition. And whilst I found myself having taken even more video and photos, I am a lot more organised this time around, so am hopeful to get videos out at a faster rate.

I’ll also be getting out locally every now and then, so you can expect some more Aussie content sprinkled here and there in the mix. Realistically, this probably won’t be until the new year (I know how time disappears around Christmas), but there should be lots of the Alps between now and then!

Heaven for Landscape Photographers

So we started our holiday in very South-East of Germany in the stunning Berchtesgaden Alps, which is one of the most magnificent places for landscape photography I have ever been. Mountains, lakes, woods, gorges, waterfalls, and gorgeously located little chapels – all of this can be found in Berchtesgadener Land, along with a lovely village filled with colourful old buildings, a lot of history, and one of the best spirit distilleries in the country.

Thanks to jetlag we were awake many hours before sunrise on our first morning, and were gifted with wonderful conditions for dawn photography at the famous Königsee. Calm and peaceful, with tendrils of low fog drifting through, I couldn’t have asked for a better start!

After a wonderful breakfast we headed up the Jenner – one of the mountains surrounding Berchtesgaden – for a walk in the sun on a glorious spring day!

In this part of the world, hiking can be a very civilised affair, with huts found along the way – up mountains and beside lakes – where you can stop for a meal or a refreshing beverage and enjoy the scenery. We were blessed with the perfect weather for such an occasion.

So keep your eyes peeled for the first video from our extensive series exploring the wonders of the Alps – it will be out very soon!
